'56). This exhibition offers a glimpse into the creative processes behind the architecture, through works in four mediums — collage, sculpture, architectural drawing and scale models. Examples of Meier's personal artistic explorations are presented alongside drawings and models of two unbuilt projects proposed for Cornell University's campus: Cornell Undergraduate Housing (1974) and Alumni & Admissions Center (1988). This installation integrates the abstract and seemingly chaotic nature of Meier's artwork with the order and geometry characteristic of his architecture. It displays how Great Britain was supreme on the battlefield (Nelson’s Column), cultured (National Gallery), had an empire (Canada and South Africa House), a monarchy (Admiralty Arch) a government (view down Whitehall) and divine guidance (St. Martin’s Church). The Travulgar Square project continued the translation of city mood into built form, but this time not in the image of Imperialism, but as a mirror of late bourgeois consumer culture. The People’s Meeting Dome designed by Tejlgaard + Jepsen creates an argument for a deconstructed dome that generates architecturally compelling spaces. The breaks in the dome allow for the site to penetrate the project. Niches are oriented to the entrances of the site and program can develop from the form. The People’s Meeting Dome is composed of 7 distinct geodesic domes that join together by lateral bracing. The model construction took on four distinct phases: base construction, joint manufacturing, assembly, and tensioning the cables. The base showcased the internal beam system under the floor boards which was weighed down by massive steel plates to keep the lightweight structure from lifting in the wind. Next each of the five different joint types were soldiered together out of cut brass strips and then chemically treated for weather resistance. A custom jig was made to create the three dimensional curvature associated with each of the joints that were so critical in angling the boards properly to form geodesic domes. Then the actual erection of the domes took place fitting the boards between all of the custom joints. The vision derives from a grassroots intervention: a complete re-appropriation of the abandoned Queensway Railway. The property lines of the city fabric are folded up onto the three dimensionalized Right of Way to arrive at a new vertical city. This reinterpretation of the Right of Way begins questioning the distinction between private and public space in an urban context. Between the two vertical neighborhoods the distinction between private and public becomes blurred. The rooftop of the lab building provides vertical evacuation refuge in the event of a tsunami event. The lab wing roof contains the evacuation area while the commons wing has an exterior sloping ramp starting at the southeast corner of the site running up over the building and eventually connecting to the lab wing roof. Dowker Knot theory- a branch in mathematics views a knot as the embedding of a circle in three dimensional Euclidean space and then fusing the ends to-gether. I began using these knots as proposals for circulation diagrams and the form evolved concurrently. The inspiration came from the artwork of Sol Lewitt which is showcased inside the gallery spaces. Sol Lewitt’s art is very process based. He uses a certain algorithmic formula to generate his art and systems to produce it. He deals with lines frequently and the mathematical approach to his design is reflected in the design of the Dowker Pavilion. The site was chosen based on the frequency of disturbed uban features along the road: lack of eyes on the street, maintenance, and extreme expansion and contraction of space.
